How Chessex Reintroduced Creative Freedom into Dice Design
Chessex: Engineering the Art of the Roll

Chessex has been synonymous with the “iconic roll,” blending deep industry roots with a relentless drive for aesthetic innovation. For decades, they have set the global, high quality standard for color, detail, and durability.
Now, as the tabletop industry enters a new era of customization, Chessex continues to push the boundaries of craftsmanship, ensuring that every die tells a story.is more than a manufacturer; it is a pillar of the tabletop gaming community.
Founded by Donald Reents in 1980, the brand’s journey began in the aisles of Games of Berkeley before evolving from a retail powerhouse into the world’s leading producer of high-quality gaming dice
The beauty of the brand is that even today, Chessex is still motivated by their founding mission: to make high-quality dice that are affordable for all gamers, because you can never have too many dice!
The Starting Point
The collaboration between Chessex and Marketiger did not begin with a defined challenge, but with a simple question. During Gen Con, an early-stage, low-quality sample was presented to Donald Reents, founder of Chessex. The concept was clear: could full-color 3D printed dice innovate the industry and open up new possibilities for the dice industry?
While the initial results were far from production-ready, both teams immediately recognized the potential. What followed was not a typical supplier relationship, but a joint R&D journey, focused on exploring how this technology could be refined into a viable, high-quality product, meeting the standards of the gamers community.
Over the next three years, this collaboration led to the development of a fully optimized workflow, transforming an early concept into a production-ready solution capable of delivering highly detailed, full-color dice with unprecedented creative freedom.
Developing a New Creative Standard
Following the initial concept, Marketiger and Chessex began a focused R&D process to explore how full-color 3D printing could be applied to dice in a way that meets the expectations of both performance and design.
The goal was not simply to produce dice, but to unlock new creative possibilities while maintaining the quality and consistency that players expect.
Through continuous iteration, testing, and refinement, the collaboration evolved into a fully developed production workflow. This made it possible to translate complex digital designs into physical dice with a high level of accuracy, detail, and repeatability.
This approach enables complete design freedom, including:
- Complex geometries and unique shapes
- Intricate surface reliefs and fine details
- Rich full-color gradients and patterns
- Embedded objects within transparent dice, without affecting balance or performance
- Internal inclusions and highly customized design elements
Each design can now be realized exactly as envisioned, without compromise between creativity and functionality.
Marketiger and Chessex are redefining what’s possible by experimenting with innovative designs and bold creative ideas.

Results & Impact
Through this collaboration, Chessex has unlocked a new level of creative freedom in dice design—allowing ideas to move from concept to physical product without the limitations of traditional production methods.
This shift has enabled:
- The creation of highly detailed and expressive dice designs
Bringing complex geometries, surface reliefs, and intricate color compositions to life - New product possibilities
Including designs with embedded objects, internal inclusions, and unique visual effects - Greater flexibility in design exploration
Allowing new concepts to be developed and refined without creative constraints - A faster path from idea to product
Enabling Chessex to respond more quickly to new ideas and opportunities - Production-ready visual quality
Allowing designs to be used directly for marketing, previews, and customer engagement - Maintaining the balance of the dice
Marketiger’s unique process does not have any influence on the balance of the dice
Most importantly, creativity is no longer limited by production: it drives it.
Looking Ahead
The collaboration between Chessex and Marketiger demonstrates what becomes possible when creative ambition is no longer limited by production constraints.
By combining design freedom with a production-ready workflow, this approach opens the door to a new generation of products, where complexity, customization, and storytelling take center stage.
This is not limited to dice manufacturing. The same principles apply across industries where design, differentiation, and speed to market are critical, from collectibles and gaming to consumer products and branded merchandise.
With Marketiger’s platform, companies can move seamlessly from idea to production, whether creating a single unique item or scaling to larger volumes.
